The talks in this book are designed to expose children to Christianity so that they can explore it for themselves and make up their own minds. They are structured in a way that stays within educational guidelines and the law.
Each talk has a teaching point, and is cross-referenced by both Bible references and one or more moral themes so that schools can record the values that they are addressing. Themes include co-operation, courage, facing peer pressure, friendship, honesty, obedience, saying sorry, self-worth, thoughfulness and trust. These assemblies will help teachers and invited visitors to lead an assembly that will inspire children. In addition to an illustrated talk, each outline includes suggested songs and a prayer.
Chris Nicholls draws on his experience of regularly taking assemblies in schools in East Sussex, England and includes an extended introduction to the book which covers the following issues:
- Creating atmosphere
- Overcoming the cringe factor
- Rounding them up
- The dilution of distance
- Stage fright
- Storytelling
- Illustrating your talk
- Object lessons
- Working with vent dolls
- Involvement and participation
- Prayer and reflection
- Emergencies
